OSHA requires the 10-Hour Outreach class to contain at least 10 student contact hours. Training is limited to 7.5 contact hours per calendar day, so the course must be conducted over at least two calendar days. Breaks, meals, attendance and other administrative time do not count toward the required 10 hours.

Course Description

The OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Outreach Training Program provides entry-level workers with basic safety and health hazard-awareness training.

The program focuses on the recognition, avoidance, control, and prevention of workplace hazards commonly encountered in general industry. Participants also receive information about workers’ rights, employer responsibilities, OSHA resources, and how to file a workplace safety or health complaint.

OSHA describes the 10-hour program as primarily intended for workers who need fundamental awareness of common job-related safety and health hazards.

Who Should Take This Course?

The OSHA 10-Hour General Industry program is appropriate primarily for entry-level workers and employees working in general industry environments, including:

• Manufacturing and production employees
• Warehouse and distribution center workers
• Logistics employees
• Maintenance personnel

• Healthcare and support-service employees

Important

This is the General Industry program. It is not the same as the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Industry Outreach Training Program.

Workers whose primary occupation is construction should verify which OSHA Outreach program is required by their employer, contract, union, or job site.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to:

1. Explain basic workers’ rights, employer responsibilities, OSHA resources, and procedures for reporting workplace safety concerns.
2. Identify common general industry hazards associated with walking-working surfaces, electricity, fire, chemicals, machinery, and workplace operations.
3. Recognize and apply basic hazard-prevention and control measures, including appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
4. Interpret basic hazard communication information, including labels and Safety Data Sheets.
5. Demonstrate awareness of safe work practices that can help reduce occupational injuries and illnesses.

Course Curriculum

The OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Outreach Training Program requires a minimum of 10 hours of instruction.

Required Topics — 6 Hours

OSHA establishes these six required topics and minimum instructional times for the 10-Hour General Industry program.

Elective Topics — Minimum 2 Hours

A minimum of two hours must be selected from OSHA-designated elective topics, with at least two topics presented.

Topics may include:

• Hazardous Materials
• Permit-Required Confined Spaces
• Lockout/Tagout
• Machine Guarding
• Welding, Cutting and Brazing
• Introduction to Industrial Hygiene
• Bloodborne Pathogens
• Ergonomics
• Fall Protection
• Safety and Health Programs
• Powered Industrial Vehicles
• Materials Handling

Each selected topic must be presented for at least 30 minutes.

Optional Topics — 2 Hours

The remaining 2 hours may be used to address other relevant general industry safety and health hazards or to expand required or elective topics.

Each instructional topic must be presented for a minimum of 30 minutes.

7 Safety Training LLC uses an interactive adult-learning approach that may include:

• Instructor-led presentations
• Workplace hazard-recognition exercises

• Knowledge checks and learning assessments

OSHA requires Outreach classes to incorporate participatory activities such as workshops, case studies, exercises and demonstrations.

Training Options

In-Person Training

Instructor-led classroom training conducted by an OSHA-Authorized General Industry Outreach Trainer.

Live Instructor-Led Videoconference — Zoom

When scheduled, this course may be delivered through live videoconference in accordance with applicable OSHA Outreach Training Program requirements.

Remote students must:

• Attend the training live.
• Remain visible on camera during the class.
• Use functioning camera and audio equipment.
• Participate actively in required activities.
• Comply with attendance and identity-verification procedures.
• Use an eligible computer or device that meets applicable training requirements.

OSHA permits live video conferencing, but distinguishes it from asynchronous or self-paced online Outreach training. Trainers and students must use camera and audio hardware throughout the class, and OSHA does not permit cellular devices to be used to deliver or receive this type of live video-conference training.

Prerequisites

There are no OSHA course prerequisites to attend the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Outreach Training Program.

The course is designed primarily for entry-level workers and individuals seeking fundamental workplace hazard-awareness training.

Course Completion Requirements

To successfully complete the program, participants must:

• Attend 100% of the required 10 contact hours.
• Complete all required course topics.
• Participate in instructional activities.
• Comply with attendance and identity-verification requirements.
• Meet applicable OSHA Outreach Training Program requirements.
• Complete applicable 7 Safety Training LLC learning assessments and continuing education requirements.

OSHA requires students to attend the entire class and complete all requisite topics and minimum contact hours before receiving a Student Course Completion Card.

Upon Successful Completion

Participants who successfully meet all applicable course requirements may receive:

7 Safety Training LLC Certificate of Completion

A certificate documenting successful completion of the training.

OSHA Outreach Training Program Student Course Completion Card

The OSHA-authorized trainer submits the applicable course documentation through the trainer’s Authorizing Training Organization for processing.

OSHA requires Student Course Completion Cards to be provided directly to the student within 90 calendar days from the course end date. The card is a course-completion card and is not an OSHA certification or professional license.

OSHA 10 General Industry and New York City

NYC Department of Buildings does not regulate OSHA Outreach Training or OSHA cards, because OSHA is a federal program. NYC DOB does, however, establish separate Site Safety Training requirements for construction personnel working on covered NYC construction sites.

The OSHA 10-Hour General Industry course should not be advertised as an “NYC DOB-approved OSHA course.”

This course is OSHA 10-Hour General Industry, not OSHA 10-Hour Construction.

New York City construction sites may be subject to separate Site Safety Training (SST) requirements under NYC Department of Buildings regulations. Before registering, construction workers should verify the specific OSHA and SST training required for their job site.
